Ajaxian.com just announced their upcoming ajaxian conference event, The Ajax Experience set for May 10th - 12th, 2006 in San Francisco. They've got a bunch of speakers on board, with possibly more in the works.

For years I have been contemplating attending one of these types of events, especially SXSW, but haven't ever done it. Cost might be one reason, time another. The biggest reason might just be my lack of understanding of these things.

Then this one popped up. It's about Ajax, with which I'm slightly enamored (though not necessarily professionally attached to). It's in San Francisco, which is only 30 miles from where I live. And, it's in May 2006, which means I actually have time to consider going.

Can anyone offer some advice to a potential conference first-timer? Are conferences like this worth it, especially for a hacker/hobbyist looking to move his career forward?

Update (16 Jan, 2006): While the homepage of The Ajax Experience website remains 'coming soon,' I unexpectedly stumbled across the list of speakers in a fit of random googling. Heavy Java background, this lot.
